National Disability Insurance Scheme

Introduced in 2013, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was intended to revolutionise the way in which disabled people could access the support needed to live full, independent lives. NDIS is available to eligible people who suffer from psychosocial, sensory, intellectual, physical, or cognitive disability. NDIS isn't a welfare benefit; rather, it is funding to ensure people with diverse abilities are supported appropriately. The focus is on proactive management and assistance to facilitate improvement, progression and increased independence. NDIS became available in Queensland from 2019. NDIS is available to eligible children who are aged 7 or over. The upper age limit for claiming NDIS is 65.

NDIS Support Categories

NDIS funding comes under three main categories: core, capital, and capacity building.

Core is defined as "a support that enables a participant to complete activities of daily living and enables them to work towards their goals and meet their objectives.”

Capital spend is "an investment, such as assistive technologies, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, funding for capital costs (e.g. to pay for specialist disability accommodation)".

The government states that capacity spend is "a support that enables a participant to build their independence and skills." The guidance also gives fifteen key objectives of NDIS funding. Meeting some or all of these objectives provides the basis for NDIS approval.

Fees & Funding

When accessing care, the cost is an important issue for nearly all our clients. If you require care but aren't sure what your funding options are, please get in touch. If you're not currently receiving NDIS, if eligible, we can direct you to the application process. For clients in need of NDIS funding, we are a registered NDIS provider who is here to help. If you have received funding under NDIS Objective 14 (Improving Life Choices), we are able to complete plan management services on your behalf. For non-NDIS clients, we can often suggest alternative sources of funding. Note that we also take private clients, offering a selection of affordable payment options that provide plenty of flexibility.

NDIS Plan Management

If you are in need of NDIS plan management, we can help. NDIS clients are free to manage their own funding, or use the services of a professional plan manager. Plan managers can facilitate access to appropriate care providers, as well as make sure that invoices are paid, appropriate financial records are kept and NDIS reporting arrangements are satisfied. If you receive funding under Objective 14 of NDIS guidance (Improving Life Choices), you can receive professional plan management services from an approved provider (such as DAWN), at no additional cost. If you haven't obtained Objective 14 funding, you can apply for it as part of your review process.

NDIS Plan Review

Periodic review is essential in order to ensure that a client's goals are being worked towards, and that NDIS funding is being utilised in the best manner. Reviews are normally facilitated by plan managers and typically take place annually or biannually. They are an opportunity to see what's working well and what needs to be improved. They are also a chance to consider adjusting funding levels if a client's needs have changed in the period since the last review. If clients have previously been self-managing, an initial review is often the point at which they decide to opt for professional plan management and apply to NDIS in order to have this need paid for.
